Cotton Tote Bag Handles: Handle Type and Length Selection Guide

Cotton Tote Bag Handles: Handle Type and Length Selection Guide
Short answer

In a cotton tote bag, the handle is chosen according to how the bag will be carried and what it will carry: a short carry handle for carrying by hand, a long handle for hanging on the shoulder, a hand-hole construction for light distribution. We do not state centimetre or kilogram values on our product pages; handle length is planned to your request in custom production and settled at the quote stage.

When ordering a cotton tote bag with handles, the handle is often the last detail considered, yet it is what the person carrying the bag touches most: it is the handle that tires the hand or shoulder, keeps slipping the bag, or drags it on the floor. A well-chosen handle, nobody notices.

This page turns handle choice into an order: it lists the handle names in the catalogue, the handle type by carrying style, the relationship between length and bag size, the points to check under heavy load, and the information to write in a quote. For details on length, you can also look at our handle article on the blog.

What Types of Cotton Tote Bags with Handles Are There?

Three handle names appear on our product pages: carry-handle, long-handle and hand-hole. In a carry-handle bag, a short handle attached to the body is carried by hand; in a long-handle model the handle is long enough to hang on the shoulder or arm; in a hand-hole bag, instead of a separate handle, a hole cut in the body serves as the handle.

The handle attachment varies with the construction of the bag: in a nonwoven bag it is usually stitched to the body, in an ultrasonic bag it is attached by welding or bonding. If you have in mind a handle shape you do not see in the catalogue, describe it in your own words in the quote form; whether it is suitable for production becomes clear in the discussion. A handle in the same fabric as the body simplifies the look; if you want a different fabric or a webbing strip, add that to the request too.

Which Handle Should You Choose According to How It Is Carried?

The first question in choosing a handle is how the bag will be carried. The same bag may be carried by hand for a short time at a trade show, or on a shop customer's shoulder for weeks; the handle needs of the two uses differ. The table pairs common carrying styles with a suitable handle approach and also shows what to look out for in each case.

Read the table as a starting point, not a prescription. Who will carry the bag also matters: if the same bag will be used by children, older people or people wearing thick coats, the handle length should be considered accordingly. Writing such a detail in your request helps us plan the handle to suit your job. If you will give the same bag to several groups, you can base it on the most common carrying style and add the second possibility as a note.

How Does Handle Length Match the Bag Size?

Choosing handle length independently of bag size is an easy way to go wrong. When a long handle meets a long body, the bag hangs low and nears the leg or the floor. On a wide, landscape model, a very short handle makes the bag hard to grip. When the handle is chosen in proportion to the bag's size, it is both comfortable and neat-looking.

We do not state handle values in centimetres in the catalogue, so we do not give a number. A practical way is to measure the handle of a bag you have and like with a ruler and write that value as an example in the details field of the quote. In custom production, handle length is planned to your request; suitability and terms are settled at the quote stage.

What Should You Check on a Bag with Handles for Heavy Loads?

With a heavy load, handle length alone is not enough. The width of the handle, the strength of the point where it is attached to the fabric and the body fabric work together; a wide handle spreads the load over a larger area and cuts into the hand or shoulder less. We do not give a kilogram value, because there is no carrying-capacity information in the catalogue; instead we assess the real loaded weight and the frequency of use together with you. Whether the bag will be used with a heavy load several times a day or once a week also affects the fabric and attachment decision. It is enough to write the following information in the quote:

  • The approximate weight of the bag when full
  • How often and how many times the bag will be used
  • Whether the handle will be carried by hand or on the shoulder
  • Body fabric: cotton, stitched nonwoven or ultrasonic
  • Whether you want reinforcement at the attachment point

How Does the Handle's Look Reflect on the Brand?

The handle is not only the bag's carrier but also part of its look. A handle in the same fabric as the body gives a plain look; a handle in a different colour or fabric can bring the bag closer to the brand's colours. In custom production, details such as size, colour, handle and pocket can be determined to your request; if you want a particular colour or fabric for the handle, write it in the quote request, and whether it is available is settled at that stage.

The area near the handle is narrow for printing; placing the logo on the wide surface between the handles is often more legible. We check the placement together at design approval, and if you tell us from which direction the bag will be seen while carried, we prepare the draft accordingly. If you are considering two-sided printing, we can look together on the draft at how the handle position on each face will frame the logo.

Bag with Handles or Hand-Hole Bag?

In light, high-volume distribution, two options are often compared: a bag with a separate handle and a hand-hole construction. Because a hand-hole bag has no separate handle attachment, the look is plain. In return, the load rests on the area around the hole, so the contents are expected to stay light. This construction is often considered for jobs such as brochures, catalogues and small gift packages.

A bag with a separate handle spreads the weight over the handle and the body, and also allows models that can be hung on the shoulder. What decides which to choose is the weight of what is in the bag and how long it will be carried. If you are unsure about the two, you can ask for two quotes with the same size and print and decide by seeing the difference side by side.

How Do You Write Handle Information in a Quote?

Because the handle is one of the extra details that affect the price in a quote, stating it clearly prevents both misunderstanding and surprises. If you have chosen a ready-made model, write the model name and the detail you want to change; if you want custom production from the start, state the handle information together with the size and fabric. The list below gathers the information that is useful to include in a quote request:

  • Handle type: carry-handle, long-handle or hand-hole
  • Carrying style: by hand, on the shoulder or on the back
  • Desired handle length (cm), or a bag whose size is given as an example
  • The approximate weight of what will go in the bag
  • If you have a special request for the handle's colour or fabric, a description of it
  • Bag size, fabric, print and quantity details

Frequently asked questions

It is chosen according to how the bag will be carried: carry-handle for carrying by hand, long-handle for hanging on the shoulder, hand-hole construction for light and plain distribution. With a heavy load, ask separately about the point where the handle joins the body. If you are undecided, it is enough to write what you will carry and how you will carry it.
