Cotton Tote Bag Materials: Which Fabric Suits Which Job?

Cotton Tote Bag Materials: Which Fabric Suits Which Job?
Short answer

Cotton tote bag materials fall into two main fabric groups: woven cotton (raw cotton and coloured fabric) and nonwoven fabric, made from synthetic fibres such as polypropylene without weaving. Nonwoven is called a nonwoven bag when joined by stitching and an ultrasonic bag when joined by ultrasonic welding. For long-term use and a gift-like feel, cotton stands out; for light, high-quantity distribution, nonwoven does. Paper bags, by contrast, are paper-based.

In a promotional order, the fabric decision is often discussed last, yet it is what most determines the bag's weight, print look, lifespan and ease of distribution. When similar-sounding names such as cotton, nonwoven, stitched nonwoven (tela), ultrasonic, fibre and paper come up in the catalogue, confusion is natural.

In this guide we explain in plain language what each material is, what it is good for and what to look at when choosing. Because we have been manufacturing in our workshop in Konya Karatay since 2013, we have organised the distinctions in the order a buyer needs them when deciding.

What Materials Are Cotton Tote Bags Made From?

The materials used in promotional bags fall under three main headings: woven cotton, nonwoven (non-woven) fabric and paper-based board. Woven cotton is obtained by weaving threads together; raw cotton is its untreated, cream-toned form. Nonwoven, on the other hand, is prepared without weaving thread, by bonding fibres with a special method.

Fibre and paper bags are mentioned alongside these two as separate options. Because the names sound alike, confusion can arise before ordering. The table below puts the materials you will meet in our catalogue side by side in terms of structure, joining method and the job they are most used for; you can compare everything from raw cotton to paper at a glance.

Cotton Fabric: Raw Cotton and Coloured Fabric

Raw cotton is an untreated cotton weave and keeps its natural cream tone. In raw cotton tote bags we generally use cotton-based material. Because cotton tote bags can be washed and reused, the logo circulates from hand to hand for months; the cream background also shows logos in dark tones clearly.

Coloured fabric options come into play when you want to bring the bag closer to your corporate colour. Because the fibre content and thickness of coloured fabrics can differ by model, ask about these two points at the quote stage. If you have washing expectations, state those too; the way colour and print respond to washing varies by fabric.

What Is Nonwoven, and What Do "Tela" and Ultrasonic Mean?

Nonwoven is, as the name says, a non-woven fabric; it is formed by bonding synthetic fibres such as polypropylene together with a special method, without weaving. In Turkey this fabric and the bags made from it are commonly called "tela". Because it is light and offers a flat surface, it is common in high-quantity distribution bags; it also provides a convenient base for printing.

Bags made from the same fabric are divided by joining method. Those with pieces sewn with thread are listed as tela (nonwoven bags), and those joined by ultrasonic welding or bonding in the ultrasonic group. On our product pages, 100 gsm fabric examples appear for stitched nonwoven bags and 60 gsm for ultrasonic models; production in other weights is also possible and is settled at the quote stage.

Cotton or Nonwoven? Choosing by Situation

There is no single material that suits every job; the right material changes with the bag's purpose. Three questions usually settle it: how many people will it be given to, how long is it expected to be used, and what will go in it? The table below summarises which direction to look in for common situations.

The budget should not be set by looking at the initial cost alone. A bag that is used a few times and thrown away and a model that is carried around for years reach very different numbers of people with your logo. For this reason, we recommend bringing the expected service life and the settings where the bag will be seen into the quote discussion from the start.

Choosing a Material by Situation

How Do Fibre and Paper Bags Differ from Cotton?

On our product pages, the fibre bag is described as a flexible, durable and recyclable product; shoulder-strap, hand-carried and drawstring models are in this group. Because the exact type and thickness of the fabric vary by model, we settle this information at the quote stage.

A paper bag, on the other hand, is based on paper and cardboard, not fabric; it is also known as a kraft bag. It suits presentation when handing over a product in a shop and offers a large print surface. If you are considering a solution that will carry heavy loads or be used many times, fabric models are generally a more comfortable choice.

What Determines a Bag's Durability?

Durability cannot be judged by the name of the fabric alone. Even a thick fabric can cause problems if the handle attachment is weak or if the bag is cut too small for the load it will hold. So you need to look at the construction as well as the material; the points below show the main things to check. How important each one is varies with where the bag will be used.

The catalogue does not give a kilogram figure for carrying capacity, because two models made from the same fabric can carry different loads depending on size, handle and stitching. It is enough for you to tell us what you will carry and its approximate weight. We determine the fabric, fabric weight (gsm) and handle construction with you at the quote stage, to suit where the bag will be used.

  • Fabric weight (gsm): as the fabric gets heavier, its thickness and load-bearing strength generally increase.
  • Joining method: the stitching or ultrasonic welding line should be even and continuous.
  • Handle attachment: the point where the handle is fixed to the body is where the load is greatest.
  • Size and load balance: for heavy products, the base and gusset should be wide enough to spread the load.

Reusable or Recyclable?

Both cotton and nonwoven bags can be used many times, unlike single-use plastic bags; cotton can also be washed and reused. Environmentally, what really matters is how many times the bag is used: a bag left in a drawer is of no benefit whatever material it is made from. So usage frequency should also be taken into account when choosing a material.

We need to speak with restraint about recyclability. On our product pages, nonwoven bags are described as recyclable, eco-friendly and antibacterial; these are descriptions in the product texts, not a separate environmental or test claim. Whether recycling actually happens depends not only on the material but also on the collection and sorting system where you are.

What Should You Write About the Material When Asking for a Quote?

You do not have to decide on the fabric on your own. The information below makes both the material suggestion and the quote more accurate. You do not need to know all of it; just write down the points you are unsure about, and we will propose the options side by side. You can request a quote through the Get a Quote form, by phone or on WhatsApp.

  • The bag's purpose: such as grocery shopping, a trade show, a gift or an enrolment period.
  • The approximate quantity and how the bags will be distributed.
  • The product that will go inside and its estimated weight.
  • The number of colours in your logo and, if you have one, its vector file.
  • Your fabric preference; if you are undecided, the two options you would like to see side by side.
  • If it is tied to an event or campaign, that date.

Frequently asked questions

The difference lies in the structure of the fabric: a cotton tote bag is made from a woven fabric (in raw cotton, a cotton-based material), while nonwoven is made from non-woven fabric produced from synthetic fibres such as polypropylene. Cotton can be washed and used for years and gives a gift feel; nonwoven is lighter and suits high-volume distribution. If you write down your purpose and quantity, we will quote both options side by side.
