How Do You Strengthen a Bag Base? Carrying Safety and Load Capacity

Short answer: A bag base is strengthened by the number of fabric layers, the stitching or welding line, a bottom gusset and, if needed, a reinforcement piece. Carrying safety depends not only on the base but also on the handle attachment, the fabric weight and how the load is distributed. The question of how many kilograms a cotton tote bag carries has no fixed answer in our catalogue: we do not give a kg value; you describe the load you will carry and the bag is planned accordingly at the quote stage.

A bag's carrying strength is the strength of its weakest link. Even if the base is sound, if the handle attachment is not enough the bag gives way at the handle; even if the handle is sound, if the base is weak it gives way at the bottom. This is why the question "how many kilos does this bag carry?" is often an incomplete one.

Below you will find the path the load takes through the bag, how the base can be strengthened, how the handle and stitching attachment are assessed and how to describe your own load in the quote.

What Path Does the Load Take Through the Bag?

The weight of the product put in the bag first falls on the base, from there passes to the side seams or welding lines, then reaches the handle attachment and comes down through the handle to your hand or shoulder. Each link in the chain passes load to the next; whichever is less durable, the bag fails there. The shape of the product changes the result too: an angular box puts the load on the edges of the base, while a soft package spreads it across the base.

Our catalogue does not publish kilogram values for the carrying capacity of bags, and we do not make up figures; since two bags of the same size can have different fabric, stitching and handles, a single value would be misleading. Instead we suggest that you describe what you will carry and, if necessary, test the bag with it.

How Is a Bag Base Strengthened?

The following are the ways generally used in bag construction. Which of them can be applied varies by model and is confirmed at the quote stage. Because the base is the part of the bag that first meets the load, the decision on strengthening is made together with what will be carried and how it will be used.

Of the 171 products in our catalogue that list a size, 95 are gusseted and 76 have no gusset; the most common gusset widths are 8 and 10 cm. If you will carry bulky or angular products, a gusseted construction is one of the practical ways to widen the base.

  • Using the fabric in two layers at the base thickens the area that takes the load.
  • Adding a separate reinforcement piece reduces the load piling up at a single point.
  • Tightening the base stitching or sewing a double line strengthens the join.
  • A bottom gusset gives the base width; the bag stands upright and the load is spread over a wider area.
  • For boxed or angular products, matching the base width to the base of the product prevents the corners from straining the fabric.
  • On ultrasonic-welded models, the continuity of the base line and the strength of the edges are checked.

How Is the Handle Attachment Assessed?

Handle strength is judged not only by the handle itself but by the point where it joins the bag. Is the area where the handle is stitched or welded to the fabric wide and reinforced, is the attachment line laid so that it withstands the direction of pull, and is the handle wide and thick enough for the weight of the bag? These three questions best describe how the handle behaves under real load.

The way the bag is carried also affects the choice of handle. With short handles carried by hand the load is concentrated at a single point; with long handles hung from the shoulder the load is spread over a wider area, but the attachment point is pulled for a long time. You can find the detail in our article on handle length and type; with a heavy load, the handle type needs to be discussed together with the attachment area.

What Should You Look At Depending on What You Will Carry?

What is expected of the same bag changes with the job. At a trade show a stack of catalogues strains the corners of the base, at the supermarket a bottle pulls on the handle, and at a seminar light documents hardly strain any link. The table shows where to look first in each use.

Priority checkpoints by use

UseCharacteristics of the loadWhat to look at first
Shop and boutique bagBoxed or packaged, angular productsBase width, handle attachment, strength of the base edges
Trade show and congress bagStacks of catalogues, brochures and documents; hard cornersBase width, side seams, handle attachment, holding shape under load
Grocery and shopping bagProducts of different shapes, sometimes heavy and liquidFabric weight, base, handle attachment and handle width
Seminar and event handoutLight documents and small giftsLightness and print area; if the load is light, a plain construction may be enough

How Is Carrying Capacity Tested?

A simple trial you can do outside a laboratory shows whether the bag is enough for your use. Put in your own typical load, lift it by the handles, carry it for a while and shake the bag gently. Then examine the base, the side seams and the handle attachments. This trial does not produce a measurable kg value; for a critical use an independent test is needed.

  • Prepare the load with real products; equal weights put in their place do not show the effect of shape.
  • Lift the bag holding both handles evenly and observe the shape of the base.
  • Check whether the fabric wrinkles or pulls at the handle attachments.
  • Examine the stitching or welding line for opening, loosening or thread slippage.
  • Empty and fill the same bag several times; a problem not visible on first loading may appear on repetition.

How Do You Describe Your Load in the Quote?

Describing your load rather than asking for a kilogram value makes the quote clearer. In the product type, material, size (width x height x gusset) and details message fields of the quote form, you can write the following; you do not need to know all of it, as much as you know is enough.

With this information the fabric, fabric weight, handle and base structure are planned together. Do not forget to add the estimated quantity and, if there is one, your desired delivery date; if the bag is tied to an event or campaign, the planning is done accordingly.

  • What will go in the bag: the type and shape of the product and whether it has hard corners.
  • The weight of a single product, or of a bagful, on your own scales.
  • Whether the bag will be carried by hand or on the shoulder and how often it will be used.
  • The inside size you need: width, height and gusset, in centimetres.
  • If there is one, a photo or the size of a bag you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Kilograms Does a Cotton Tote Bag Carry?

There is no published kilogram value for bags in our catalogue and we do not make up figures; carrying strength varies with the fabric, fabric weight, stitching, handle attachment and base. If you write what you will carry, the weight of a single item and how it will be carried, the bag is planned accordingly; the details are confirmed at the quote stage.

How Is the Carrying Capacity of a Nonwoven Bag Tested?

For a simple trial, fill the bag with your own typical load, lift it by the handles, carry it and examine the base, the seams and the handle attachments. This is not a laboratory test and does not give a measurable kg value. For critical uses you can ask for an independent test and write its scope in your quote message.

How Is Catalogue-Carrying Capacity Determined for a Trade Show Bag?

Determine the weight of the catalogue stack on your own scales, take into account hard edges that will strain the corners of the bag, and give priority to base width and handle attachment. If you write the catalogue size and quantity in the quote, the size, fabric weight and handle structure are determined together accordingly.
