How to Choose a Cotton Tote Bag for a Patisserie: Size, Base, Logo

Short answer: A cotton tote bag for a patisserie is chosen according to the size of the box you will carry: the base of the bag should cover the area of the box, the gusset should leave room for the thickness of the box, and the height should include the handle allowance. For a cake box, base strength is decisive; for a baklava box, the width and gusset; for a Turkish delight box, how many boxes will be carried together. The logo is placed on the flat front of the bag, so that it does not end up beneath the handles.

At the patisserie counter, the decision about the bag is often made at the last minute; yet what stays longest in the customer's hand is the bag rather than the box. A bag that is too narrow squeezes the box, one that is too wide lets the box slide around inside, and one with a weak base tips the box on its side on the way.

In this article we go step by step through how to work out the bag size for baklava, cake and Turkish delight boxes, why the base is a separate decision, and where to put the logo on the bag. The bag is a carrier outside the box; it is no substitute for packaging that comes into contact with food.

How Do You Work Out the Bag Size from the Box Size?

First measure the box in three directions: width, length and height. Then decide how the box will sit in the bag: lying flat or standing upright? The bag size is written in centimetres as width x height x gusset, and the way the box sits tells you which of these three values will be decisive.

For a flat box lying flat, the base of the bag, that is the area formed by the width and the gusset, must cover the base of the box; the height must be enough for the box height plus the handle attachment allowance. For example, if your box is 30 x 20 x 8 cm, the base must be able to open out to an area of at least 30 x 20 cm. For a box that stands upright, the reverse applies. How much the allowance will be varies with the fabric and the gusset, so it is clarified in the quote.

  • Measure the box with its lid closed, including any tape or ribbon.
  • Decide in advance whether the box will go into the bag lying flat or standing upright.
  • If more than one box will go in the same bag, line them all up side by side or stacked and take the total size.
  • Add an allowance to the size and enter the value with the allowance in the size field of the quote form, in the order width x height x gusset.

Which Size Is Decisive for Baklava, Cake and Turkish Delight Boxes?

We have summarised the decision for three common box types in the table below. The table is for guidance; the real size of your box, the fabric of the bag and the gusset width make the final decision. It is enough to write any point you are unsure about in the quote message.

The decisive bag dimension by box type

Box typeHow it sits in the bagDecisive dimensionGusset need
Baklava box (flat, wide base)Usually lying flatWidth and gusset: must cover the base area of the boxHigh; must leave room for the thickness of the box
Cake box (square or tall)UprightHeight and base width togetherA gusseted bag is considered so that it sits flat
Turkish delight and confectionery box (small)A single box upright, or several boxes side by sideWidth, according to how many boxes will be carriedOften low; needed for many boxes
Bag carrying two boxes togetherStacked or side by sideTotal height or total widthFor a side-by-side arrangement the gusset comes to the fore, for stacked boxes the height

Why Does the Base Matter in a Cake Box Bag?

The moment the box goes into the bag, most of the load falls not on the handles but on the base. If the base is narrow or soft, the box tips on its side inside and the cake slides. In a gusseted bag, the bottom gusset forms a flat seat and the box stands upright on the floor. Of the 171 products in our catalogue with a stated size, 95 are gusseted and 76 are not; the most common gusset values are 8 and 10 cm.

In the Patisserie Bags category, sample products appear as both stitched nonwoven and ultrasonic-welded bags; in the Baklava Shop Bags and Cotton Patisserie Bags categories, the examples are listed as ultrasonic-welded. Choose the fabric according to the full weight of the box. Because the catalogue has no kilogram data for carrying capacity, we do not give figures; for heavy or multi-box carrying, ask about the fabric and base in your quote.

How Do You Plan a Carrier Bag for Turkish Delight Boxes?

Turkish delight and confectionery boxes are small but are often bought in multiples. First think about the customer's typical basket: a single box, or several boxes as gifts? For a single box, a small bag is enough. Our catalogue also has small examples such as 26x19 or 15x20.

An example scenario: a confectioner selling multi-box packs before the holiday orders two different models. The small bag is used for daily sales, and the large bag for multiple purchases. That way each customer gets the bag that suits their box, and no unnecessary empty space is left inside the bag.

How Is the Logo Positioned on a Patisserie Bag?

Once the bag leaves the shop it is seen on the street; so the logo should sit on a flat, legible surface. On a gusseted bag, the middle of the front panel is the safest area. The handle attachment stitching and the fold at the top edge must not fall over the logo. With two-sided printing, you can use the same logo on both faces, or the logo on one face and contact details on the other.

The method depends on the number of colours in the logo: screen printing for one- and two-colour logos, embroidery for small logos with fine lines, and digital printing for multicolour or photographic designs. On our product pages, single-colour, two-sided printed models are the most common; for stitched nonwoven bags, the method is listed as offset printing on the product pages. Do not print the address and telephone number so small that they cannot be read from a distance.

Limits and Quote Preparation When Buying Bags for Food Boxes

The bag is packaging that carries the box on the outside. For a box, paper or foil that will come into direct contact with food, you must clarify the question of food suitability with your box supplier and the relevant legislation; this article makes no claim of food suitability for the bag.

On the quote form, write the product type, material, size, number of print colours and printing sides; upload your logo as a PNG, JPG, WebP, PDF or EPS file of up to 5 MB. The uploaded file is not public; it can be downloaded only from the authorised administrator panel. Pricing is by quote; quantity, fabric, size and number of colours affect the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do You Choose the Bag Size for a Baklava Box?

It is chosen according to how the box sits. For a flat box lying flat, the base of the bag, that is the width and gusset, must cover the area of the box; the height must be enough for the box height plus the handle allowance. Measure the box with its lid closed and write the value with the allowance in the size field of the quote; the amount of allowance is clarified at the quote stage according to the fabric and gusset.

Is a Gusset Essential on a Patisserie Bag?

It is not essential, but for tall and heavy cake boxes a gusset lets the bag sit flat. In our catalogue, 95 products with a stated size are gusseted and 76 are not. If your box is flat and light, a bag without a gusset will also do; to be sure, it is enough to try it with a full box or write your measurements in the quote message.

With What Method Is a Logo Printed on a Patisserie Bag?

Screen printing is used for one- and two-colour logos, digital printing for multicolour or photographic designs, and embroidery for small logos with clean lines. For stitched nonwoven bags, the method is listed as offset printing on the product pages. If you are considering another method, you can ask about it when requesting the quote.

Is a Patisserie Bag Food-Safe?

The bag is for carrying outside the box and is no substitute for packaging that will come into direct contact with food. We make no statement on this page about food suitability. If you need it, ask at the quote stage and assess it together with your box supplier.
